Cataracts are a common age-related eye condition that leads to blurred vision and reduced quality of life. The good news is that cataract surgery is a highly effective and commonly performed procedure to restore clear vision. Traditionally, cataract surgery involves replacing the clouded natural lens of the eye with an intraocular lens (IOL). However, recent advancements in technology have led to the development of a revolutionary solution known as Light Adjustable Lenses (LALs). This page explores the exciting features, benefits, and potential of Light Adjustable Lenses for cataract surgery. Discover the possibilities and benefits of cataract surgery with LALs at Wesson and Mothershed Eye Center, Tupelo. Contact us today to schedule an appointment.

How do LALs Work?

LALs incorporate light-sensitive molecules, which can be adjusted using an external UV light beam. This process reshapes the intraocular lens (IOL), altering its power to correct astigmatism, nearsightedness, or farsightedness. The adjustments are painless, and each session takes less than 2 minutes, conveniently performed at our office. Special UV-blocking sunglasses are provided to protect the lens during the adjustment process.

After the initial customized treatment, additional adjustments are performed at weekly intervals, as needed. Up to three adjustments can be made, though many eyes require only one. Once the optimal result is achieved, two final “lock-in” treatments are done, after which the IOL’s power stabilizes, and no further adjustments are needed.

The Benefits of LALs

Unlike traditional IOLs, LALs offer remarkable advantages, making it a preferred choice for many patients:

Customized Vision Correction

LALs offer unparalleled flexibility in vision correction. Ophthalmologists can make precise adjustments to the lens’s power to match the patient’s unique visual requirements, leading to highly personalized results.

Reduced Dependence on Glasses

By optimizing the lens power, patients may experience reduced dependence on corrective eyewear, such as glasses or contact lenses, for various tasks, such as reading, driving, or engaging in hobbies.

Minimized Refractive Errors

Light Adjustable Lenses enable a more accurate and predictable outcome by minimizing residual refractive errors that might occur with traditional IOLs.

Non-Invasive Adjustment

The postoperative refinement of LALs is entirely non-invasive and painless. The patient simply needs to visit their ophthalmologist for UV light exposure, and no further surgery is required.

No Glare or Halos

Unlike multifocal lenses, the LAL does not produce glare, starbursts, or halos at nighttime, ensuring clear and comfortable vision at all times.

Am I a Candidate for Light Adjustable Lenses?

While Light Adjustable Lenses offer remarkable benefits, they may not suit every patient. Factors such as the health of the eye, the degree of cataract development, and certain pre-existing eye conditions will be taken into consideration by the ophthalmologist to determine if LALs are the best option for each individual.

Patients considering cataract surgery should speak with their cataract surgeon or optometrist about the benefits of LALs. Not all eye care professionals are trained in using LALs, so it’s essential to find an eye doctor experienced with this technology. By discussing LALs with our team of eye doctors, you can make an informed decision about your cataract surgery and choose the best option for your unique needs and lifestyle.

Eligibility and Costs

Cataract surgery with LALs is safe and carries no additional medical risk. However, certain factors may affect eligibility, such as pupil dilation capacity. Our experienced surgeons will determine this during your consultation.

It is essential to note that while health insurance covers cataract surgery with a basic single-focus lens implant, LALs are considered an upgrade and may not be covered. The cost of implanting and adjusting LALs is paid out-of-pocket by the patient. However, the benefits of improved natural eyesight without glasses make it an appealing option for many.
